Maine City Spotlight – Presque Isle ME – Aroostook County

Presque Isle Maine, a city in Central Aroostook County, the state’s largest of sixteen up here in the country’s right hand corner.

Presque Isle Maine, population 9692, was founded by Dennis Fairbanks, first settled in 1828. Presque Isle, Maine is the largest city in Aroostook County. Houlton Maine is Aroostook County’s Seat or “Shiretown”. 

Presque Isle Maine is bordered by the towns of Easton, Westfield, Caribou, Mapleton, Wasburn, Chapman.

Also one tip of a corner with Mars Hill, ME.

The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in 1895, started opening up access to Presque Isle, Maine for industry development. 

Presque Isle, ME city incorporated January 1, 1940 before World War II.

From the french term for penisula (presqu’île), Presque Isle Maine derived the early settlement’s name due to the courses of the Aroostook River and Presque Isle Stream creating a peninsula. “Almost an island,” the waterfront element aided lumbering, the first industry of Presque Isle’s early settlers. Before agriculture from the harvested wood land was cleared to add potato farming as the second industry.

Known as the “Star City”, Presque Isle ME’s UMPI is an educational satellite of the University of Maine college Presque Isle, University Of Maine UMPI Campussystem.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle campus is on the west side of US Rt 1.

Motorists clearly see UMPI’s large electric generating wind mill on the city’s south approach,  while heading in to the business, retail district. 

UMPI adds a college flavor to the city of Presque Isle Maine.

The Northern Maine Community College, a trades, vocational higher education center is also found in Presque Isle ME. NMCC was founded in 1961 on land at the former Presque Isle Maine air force base.


Presque Isle Maine geographically is larger than most population centers in Aroostook County. Six by six miles is the general rule for the lay out of townships, In The Center Of Presque Isle Maine, RT 1plantations.

But with the annexing of Maysville in 1893, Presque Isle doubled its land mass compared to other Aroostook County townships.

The Aroostook State Park is south of the city of Presque Isle and spreads out over close to 800 acres of land.  

Quaggy Jo Mountain’s twin peaks offer excellent area views and  family hiking option with three miles of trails.

Enjoy public facilities, take an Echo Lake dip, picnic after stretching your legs hiking.

Aroostook State Park was Maine’s first started with a private land donation of 100 acres back in 1938. Double Eagle II Memorial Park, the launch site for the first successful trans-Atlantic balloon flight in August 1978, hamptoninnhotelcrossing from the United States to Miserey, France is located near the Aroostook State Park entrance.

The Nordic Heritage Center, a year-round outdoor recreation facility has been honored, selected as a venue for International Biathlon Winter IBU Cup winter competitions.

Single track mountain biking trails over 20 miles of Nordic Heritage Center trails are free. The lodge open to the public, includes Aroostook Centre Mall, Presque Isle Maine Shopping restrooms, showers, a sauna. Everything to enhance your use, stay exploring the trails. The new Hampton Inn Hotel in Presque Isle Maine is handy to the malls, downtown city shopping.

School Administration District (SAD) 1 serves Presque Isle Maine.

The Northern Maine Regional Airport is the city’s airport, with PQI designation.

The Aroostook Centre Mall offers a variety of retail outlets for goods, services too.

US Rt 1, the primary artery to access Aroostook County runs north through Presque Isle Maine.

And the province of New Brunswick Canada is only one row of townships away to the east.

Presque Isle hospital needs are served by TAMC (The Aroostook Medical Center). Nearby Caribou Maine’s Cary Medical Center has a veterans wing providing services to those who served, dependents in Northern Maine.
