As you search the Internet looking for a safe, wholesome low cost place to live, you quickly see many not like Maine, that don't offer that.
The more people in an area and suddenly hand in hand the traffic, existence of gangs, crime and higher cost of living happens.
Jammed in and no elbow room mean people get nasty.
You in the second nature habit of always looking over your shoulder.
Drive crazy, are not happy. Avoid eye contact.
If you are after small town values, Maine still has those. Is the way life should be.
But it starts with kids taught respect for others. Your property, feelings, opinions too. Work hard for what we have. Don't expect a hand out.
Smaller Maine communities have home grown fun, recreation, traditions. If the residents there did not take on events, volunteer then the option of hiring it done would not be possible.
Money, lots of it not what complicates our area.
"Retail therapy" when you are depressed is not how we "medicate" for the blues. We head outside. Mingle with the people. Head to the woods camp, lake cottage or climb on a four wheeler, snowsled. Maybe hike, kayak. Get involved in local community events.
We make where live a better place, contribute in many ways to build pride, put the town on the map.
Our fun is home made, not store bought.

And like Maine kids who are talented in academics, music, sports, you watch them grow up. Follow their success in a small Maine town. Sometimes because you were that boy's little league coach. Or sponsored a soap box derby car for that young lady.
So when you consider a move, relocation, retirement in Maine, remember it is not just the low cost real estate that tractor beams you to Vacationland.
Enjoy the flavor, spark of the communities around those four walls.
The people of Maine are what it is all about.
Hardworking, grateful, willing to help and caring.
Maybe joyful due to being safe, just able to get outdoors any chance they can.
Not worring about their family's safety or a big mortgage payment if they have one at all. Simple living, not simple people in Maine. And being surrounded by Maine wildlife, local 4 season beauty.We are spoiled in Maine. The way life should be.
